Lancers Wrestling Philosophy

 Fanatic Trainers Win!

A common characteristic among all American world and Olympic champions is that their training attitude was to "do more than you think you ought to."  Visualize your opponent and see what he is doing.  Always outwork, out train, out lift, and out wrestle your opponent.  Being first into the wrestling room and the last one to leave has been the mindset of many a champion.

The only moves or techniques that really matters... are the ones you actually do, and do well at HIGH SPEEDS!  You should be able to score once on anyone with your "go to" move.

Wrestle like a big man.  Everyone should have a "big play" Greco-Roman throw that they can hit late in the match when a takedown won't get you the win.

Push, pummel, and pull the trigger.  Hit the big play move when you need it the most.

  Defense Wins!

If you score you may win.  If your opponent never scores, you can't lose.  Defense wins!  Be a counter-offense wrestler.  Stop your opponents attack, then score.

Conditioning is career long.  Never let yourself get out of shape.  Do some type of hard workout three times a week - all year long.  Be able to "sprint" a match.  Push yourself to go hard for six minutes.  Cross train.  Bike, run, rock climb, learn a martial art - find a new physical challenge to test your guts.

Every workout is important.  Wrestle the best you can every time you step on the mat.  Lost opportunities are gone forever.  Make the most out of every opportunity you have to prepare.  Set a goal to get better in one aspect every day.  "Every day you get better, or you get worse, you never stay the same."

Stay Fit - Eat Right.  If you stay in good shape and eat a good diet, then there is no need to "cut weight".  The healthy, fit wrestler may only have to have a hard practice to be at wrestling weight.  We do not encourage weight loss to be at a specific weight class, but encourage embracing a healthy lifestyle that will heop the athlete be a fine-tuned fat-burning machine.

  Be a man of iron

Dan Gable is quoted as saying, "You can never be too strong."  Gable is right.  Strength training is essential for the champion wrestler.  We strongly believe in specificity of training.  The reason we pump the iron 3-4 days a week all year is to be better, stronger, and well conditioned athletes - not to just look good in a singlet.  Our main goal is that for six minutes we can pound, snap, pummel and mentally and physically break our opponents because of our superior technique, position, strength and conditioning.

Seek out the best competition.  Every day seek out the best wrestler in the practice room to train with.  "Iron sharpens iron."  Tough wrestlers, tough practices, make you tougher.  We believe in going to the toughest tournaments, and seeking out the best competition available.  If you want to be the best, you have to wrestle the best.

Work your training plan.  Run three times a week, train using both aerobic and anaerobic workouts.  Strength train.  Wrestle.  Make sure you wrestle with intensity and use correct drilling of technique.  Go hard and use situations, tactics and strategies in your training routine.  Practice sound nutritional habits and get proper rest.

  SISU

SISU is a Finnish word that means TOUGHNESS.  SISU also means determination, spirit, resolve, courage, persistence, guts, tenacity, mettle, stubbornness, steadfastness, and perseverance.  SISU overcomes any adversity.  A champion needs to demonstrate SISU in the midst of all challenges. Our goal is to exhibit SISU in our daily lives.  WE NEVER QUIT.

Walk like a champion.  Be a champion in everything you do.  Walk like a champion, talk like a champion, and wrestle like a champion.  Make the championship effort at home, in the classroom, with homework, in the weight room, at practice, with your diet, in competition, and with your walk with Christ.  A true champion walks the walk 24/7.

  Be committed

Commitment is total and complete.  Commitment can never be comprised, for then it is no longer commitment, but just an empty promise.  Be committed in everything you do.  Let your "yes" be "yes" and your "no" be "no".

Commit to be a man of integrity.  This too is part of being a total champion.

Goal setting.  You must have a goal and a detailed plan of attack.  Work your plan and plan your work.  Never compromise on your daily goal and you will reach your final destination!

Be loyal to your parents, teammates, and coaches - and most of all to your Lord Jesus Christ!
